The first calendar month of the 2009 major league baseball season is over and it was a disappointing month for the Rays until last night. The Rays were 16-12 and four percentage points ahead of the Red Sox in the AL East on May 1 of 2008.
This season, they are 9-14 and five-and-one-half games behind the Red Sox.
Matt Garza showed the Red Sox they are not going to be pushovers this season by pitching seven-and-two-thirds innings of one-hit baseball. The Rays' offense hammered Josh Beckett in the 13-0 win, as he allowed seven runs and 10 hits in four-and-two-thirds innings.
It was just one game, but sometimes that is all it takes to get a team back on track. It will be interesting to see if the Rays build on this game.
